Dancing with Devils Tee

The 1720 publication, The History of Witches and Wizards, by W.P., contains 57 woodcut prints - one of them made it to this T-shirt. The 306 year old portrayal of witchcraft has been deeply influential in how witchcraft is understood and portrayed, even in modern times.

To us, this cut is special. It shows 4 witches and 4 devils in a joyful moment, dancing in circles. Even though the publication can shine light on some of the gruesome history of the witch trials, the illustration tells a story of magic without a victim. The women and the devils are dancing hand in hand, and the spell is created between them. We find it a powerful reminder of strength and resistance when humans come together in intentional joy. 

Today’s full moon is the true Midsummer mark for us. To us, Midsummer is the magical peak of the year, where life is taking the hand of death and leading it towards the creational season.

In the Scandinavian magical tradition, Midsummer is the best time for love spells. It’s the time of year when we gather 7 flowers to put under our pillows, for our true love to appear in our dreams. The 7 flowers on the back of the Dancing with Devils Tee is from an old Primstav. A Primal Stick is a stick made of bone or wood with carvings symbolizing important cyclical changes in nature. It was used both as a calendar, to remember celebrations and special events in a year, but also to forecast the weather, and to know when to harvest what. 

It feels good to us to design our merch ourselves, to keep it in line with the full picture and universe where all things Witch Club Satan - visuals, music, spells - align. 

We wanted to make this T-shirt as a special little something to celebrate the craft of magic, and our never ending attempts to master it, together.
